Herbal Medicine

Historically Yellowroot was one of the healing herbs that was used by Native Americans, by the settlers of the Appalachians and throughout the southeast..It is still commonly used throughout the southeastern United States as an herbal medicine, usually made into a tea. Yellowroot is a bitter tonic and has general tonic benefits.

A bitter tonic is defined as having a bitter taste and its main actions are to improve digestion and increase appetite (according to the definition in the Online Medical Dictionary. Yellowroot herbal tea is made by bringing a bundle to boil and then letting it steep a few minutes, straining and drinking about 2-4 ounces every day.

Keep in mind that the longer Yellowroot is boiled, the stronger and more bitter the taste becomes. Yellowroot tea can be sweetened with honey. **Yellowroot tea is also used as a dye. Please be aware that it will stain whatever you boil it in, splash or spill it on.

The tea will keep in the refrigerator for a while. However, it is not recommended that you take it daily for more than 1 week (7 days) at a time. Some people drink more than the 2-4 oz. daily amount, but they do it as a tonic, once a month (like maintenance)..

Cautions
Although not specifically mentioned for yellowroot, there are cautions to limit use of berberine containing compounds to seven days at a time. However, berberine-containing herbs are found in many herbal combination products where the synergistic effects of the various formulations may not lead to problems with longer term use.
Berberine is the major alkyloid with actions that include
• Antimicrobial action against bacteria, fungi and protozoa including Candida albicans, Cryptococcus neoformans and Mycobacterium intracellularae
• Anti-Diarrhea caused by Vibrio cholera and E. coli
• It causes a transient drop in blood pressure

The berberine from yellowroot is more difficult to separate out than it is from goldenseal. However, the value of many herbs is their benefit from the whole plant rather than just extracting one constituent.

In addition to berberine, xanthoriza simplicissima also contains minor alkaloids jatrorhizine and mognoflorine, puntarine, liriodenine and palmatine.
Berberine is found in 23 genus of plants spread across 7 plant families. Some of these include yellowroot, goldenseal,Oregon grape, barberry, tree turmeric and coptis (also known as goldthread). As goldenseal has been over harvested and is now expensive these other plants have become more poplular. Yellowroot is not listed in all the literature related to berberine containing plants perhaps because it is still largely gathered from the wild and is more widely used in locales where it grows naturally.

Research is being done to determine if yellowroot has any activity against cancer.

There are several references to yellowroot in the literature and they are not all in reference to Xanthorhiza simplicissima Other plants referred to as yellow root are Goldenseal, which is Hydrastis Canadensis and is also referred to as “orange root.” Goldenseal is even referred to as yellowroot among those who live in the southeast, so the confusion appears to be common. Goldenseal and yellowroot are both in the Ranunculaceae family (Buttercups), however they are distinctly different genus and species. Turmeric is another healing herb that is called yellow root, however it is in the ginger family (Zingiberaceae). Sometimes a search will also bring up yellow dock. Order your Yellowroot today.
