Yellowroot, or Xanthorrhiza simplicissima (synonym Xanthorrhiza apiifolia) is a member of the buttercup family (Ranunculaceae).

Yellowroot is a low growing subshrub and contributes to stabilizing the banks along streams. It is also referred to as “shrub yellowroot" and is commonly found along shady streams. A native to North America and Asia, Yellowroot is found in the United States from the northeastern states to northern Florida and to the west as far as east Texas and Ohio. It is not an invasive plant and so its growth is encouraged. Sometimes called the “poor man’s goldenseal” as one of its active alkyloids is berberine, which is found in both yellowroot and goldenseal. Yellowroot can also be cultivated and in the right growing conditions has brilliant fall color. It is considered to be an endangered plant species in Florida and as such cannot be harvested for resale. It is considered nontoxic in small doses and is still most common for it to be gathered from native natural habitats.

Yellowroot has been used as a bitter tonic among Native Americans and is a common folk remedy throughout the southeast. Oldtimers will chew on the root, however most people make yellowroot tea by boiling the roots It is commonly used for stomach problems including ulcers. The roots are yellow and have been used as a yellow dye among Native Americans to dye baskets and blankets. Native Americans also used it to treat colds and as an aid in childbirth (it stimulates uterine contractions). Yellowroot can be made into an herbal tea by putting it in water and bringing it to a boil, strain, and drink. The tea can be sweetened with honey. The longer it boils the stronger the tea will become. Its taste is strong and bitter. Oldtimers in the southern Appalachian Mountains chewed on the root; mostly they made the tea to get the children to take it. They use yellowroot for most any kind of stomach ailment.
